Winter tires from walmart?
Hey guys just wanted to know if anyone has ever used these weathermaxx winter tires they sell at Walmart. They are made by Nexen and are the exact same tire as the Nexen Wingaurd 231.
I just want to know if anyone has used this winter tire and what is your experience how they perform.
Not looking for alternative suggestions on other brand tires.
Thanks!

.....
Not necessarily the exact same.
Walmart would say to Nexen, "make some Winguard 231's for us with a Weathermaxx logo on them but for $5 less per tire than our Winguard 231 contract".
How Nexen comes up with that saving is up to them, but wouldn't be surprised if the tire doesn't get the same level of quality control.
Will RFD members who have experience with each of these tires be able to differentiate between them? Interesting to see.

I wouldn't recommend Nexen period. But that's only my personal opinion. Tires are important...

This is the key. No matter how average these winters might be.. they'll still outperform an all-season tire.

Thank you for your reply but what are you basing that on? Have you actually used the tires and are not happy with how they performed? That's the opinion I'm looking for.

Avoid. Quality control and performance not worth it.
Simplytire or Tires23 can get you different brands in terms of price [hankook, general, firestone]; check costco as well.

Sorry, just saw your thread. I have them on a 2010 Vibe. They are fantastic on fresh snow, pretty good on slush and sloppy wet weather but they are not good on straight ice. Dry weather handling also isn't good. Treadwear is fantastic, they still feel the same they did when new despite having 25,000km over 4 winters, grip is still there. This will be their 5th winter and the large old school treadblocks and sipes are all intact. I can easily go another 3 winters with these tires. I've had experience with Blizzak WS-60 and Toyo G-02's both great tires the first winter, still pretty good the 2nd, just passable for a 3rd winter but on the 4th practically unusable as a winter tire. The degradation after 2-3 winters is considerable especially if it's a dry winter. These are tires that cost over 100% more and the only conditions they out perform the Winguard is on ice, dry handling and rolling resistance. The Nexen's seem to have some rolling resistance, as soon as I put them on my gas mileage drops 5-7% and I can feel it when letting off the gas but it's pretty quiet overall for an old school tire.
Never will I buy any of these name brand winter tires, they are at their best 1-2 winters then degrade considerably once the top layer of tread starts top wear. But the TV marketing seems to work, suckers line up to spend $800-$1000 on winter tires every 3 years, because they are 'amazing', which is true for 1-2 winters only. On this alone, the Nexen's are fantastic value, and if you get them installed at WalMart they come with free rotation, no charge flat repairs and no questions asked warranty across Canada.

I ran the previous walmart snows that were based on sailuns and they worked just as well as the expensive michelins. No experience with the current weathermaxx ones.

Good to know. AFAIK very few tires - even expensive ones - are good on straight ice. Spending $800-$1000 on tires every 2 winters is worth it because tires are indeed very important, the most important safety device in the car. Having said that, how is the noise?

Either you're joking or you have lots of money to burn. I don't. At the end of the day you need to drive sensibly in bad weather no matter the tires, I've had these $800 tires, the reduced grip as the initial layer gets worn is substantial. Expensive winter tires and yearly rustproofing are the 2 biggest marketing frauds going, tire resellers plugging away at 'safety' and rustproofing living on fear marketing of rusted cars from the 1990's.
The noise isn't too bad on the 231's, there is a slight roar at 100kph and a bit of noise at really slow speeds and some noise when turning but nothing that intrudes too much into the cabin. Yes, tires are important, no I will never spend $1000 every 2 years. I'm past being a sucker. These cost me less than $400 installed and will last another 3-4 winters easy giving me about 7-8 winters. So far after 4 winters performance has not degraded cause the tread has hardly worn..
Also, people thinking they're smart for buying used tires on Kijiji think again, 'Blizzaks/X-Ice/Hakka/ for sale used only 2 winters' and the tread still looks intact and good. It's half price or less so you buy them. Meanwhile, the seller knows they're well past their best winter performance and dumps them to some unsuspecting RFD'er type who thinks he got a fantastic deal because he saved $400 and is riding on Blazzaks. Be smart people.

Check out used tires on kijiji as well, sometimes you can get a good deal. I got a set of 4 name brand winters on rim with 90%+ tread from an old dude for $400.
I know this might be an unpopular opinion here but if you know what to look for you can find some great deals, especially when the tires are practically brand new when the seller is really trying to get rid of them (which I see often on kijiji). In my case the seller was old and just scooted around town (so not much tread wear) and he bought a new car, in which the winters were no compatible.

Have been using Wintermate from Walmart bought in 2014, but just installed now, for past two weeks. So far no complaints with the noise, ride, or handling on dry pavement. Four 17" tires cost only $200 so if they don't work out, then no big deal. I can't seem to justify spending $800 yet. Just waiting for first snowfall to experience traction in real snow and ice.

Unless you have used them before and have firsthand experience with it, I think your opinion is of little value or validity.
I have used two sets of winters from Walmart so far with no issues, thank you very much.
