More offers from Walmart
I have been checking their prices for over a year and this seems to be the lowest. This price is also for the bikes that were typically $498.
Although I did see some negative comments but the price seems pretty low for those who don't want to pay over $1,000.

So many to pick. Is there a recommended one for just riding short distances for commuting?

This looks like a good price, just got back from a trip to Germany and a few other European countries where people ride bikes everywhere. In short, the bikes people ride there are just transportation and probably not worth much, so they don't stress about locking them up on the street all night. I have a few expensive mountain bikes that are great, but I would not want to leave out for even an hour. There' s a lot to be said for buying an inexpensive / beater bike, you can actually use it, and not worry about it!

Has a rechargeable battery pack and an electric motor.
Can be pedalled like a regular bike but some will "motor assist" while you pedal and others will let you ride it like a motorcycle.

Batteries must be end of life? Holy crap that's cheaper than a lot of non-electric bikes.

You need to figure out what you want a e-bike for and do some research on what is best suited for that
I'm in a small apartment with a outside storage shed, so I don't care too much about size. I need around 40km range to go to work and back.
Much less than that for just errands around town. I might ride it for fun but it ain't the primary purpose.
All of these uses cases have different bikes that suit it best

Interesting. Following for recommendations. I see the Movelo brand units have removable 350W batteries. Vs the 250W Hyper Bicyles units. Better choice?

Something that is not as cool or healthy as their owners imagine them to be.
Seriously, save your money and go for one hour walk.
These Walmart junk heaps will just leave you stranded or worse.
50 lb with cheap mechanical disc brakes. A useless 'suspension' fork with sloppy plastic bushings that's going to develop play almost immediately. Stamped steel derailleur that will snap off under under load of rider pedalling and motor kicking in if you miss-time a shift.
Buy a nice used hybrid like a Specialized Sirrus X that are on marketplace all the time for $400-500 in unused condition. You'll be much happier: almost half the weight, good hydraulic brakes, crisp shifting drivetrain with wide ratio so you can spin up almost anything.
Come on people!

One hour walk won't lead you to the same place of 1 hour bike.
