The Collect:
Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know ournecessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Havecompassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those thingswhich for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness wecannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ ourLord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,now and for ever. Amen.
Old Testament:Amos 8:1-12
1This is what the LordGodshowed me—abasket of summer fruit.2He said, “Amos, what doyou see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” ThentheLordsaid to me, The end has come upon my peopleIsrael; I will never again pass them by.3The songsof the temple shall become wailings in that day,” says theLordGod; “the dead bodies shall be many, cast out in everyplace. Be silent!”
4Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bringto ruin the poor of the land,5saying, “When willthe new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, sothat we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small andthe shekel great, and practice deceit with falsebalances,6buying the poor for silver and the needyfor a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of thewheat.”7TheLordhas sworn by the prideof Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of theirdeeds.8Shall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who lives in it, and all of it rise like theNile, and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile ofEgypt?9On that day, says the LordGod, I willmake the sun go down at noon, and darken the earth in broaddaylight.10I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on allloins, and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourningfor an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day.
11The time is surely coming, says the LordGod,when I will send a famine on the land; not a famine of bread, or athirst for water, but of hearing the words oftheLord.12They shall wander from sea to sea,and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the wordof theLord, but they shall not find it.
Psalm:Psalm 52
1You tyrant, why do you boast of wickednessagainst the godly all day long?
2You plot ruin; your tongue is like a sharpenedrazor, O worker of deception.
3You love evil more than good and lying more thanspeaking the truth.
4You love all words that hurt, O you deceitfultongue.
5Oh, that God would demolish you utterly, toppleyou, and snatch you from your dwelling, and root you out of theland of the living!
6The righteous shall see and tremble, and theyshall laugh at him, saying,
7“This is the one who did not take God for arefuge, but trusted in great wealth and relied uponwickedness.”
8But I am like a green olive tree in the house ofGod; I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.
9I will give you thanks for what you have done anddeclare the goodness of your Name in the presence of the godly.
Epistle:Colossians 1:15-28
15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstbornof all creation;16for in him all things in heavenand on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whetherthrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have beencreated through him and for him.17He himself isbefore all things, and in him all things holdtogether.18He is the head of the body, the church;he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he mightcome to have first place in everything.19For inhim all the fullness of God was pleased todwell,20and through him God was pleased toreconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, bymaking peace through the blood of his cross.21Andyou who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evildeeds,22he has now reconciled in his fleshly bodythrough death, so as to present you holy and blameless andirreproachable before him—23provided that youcontinue securely established and steadfast in the faith, withoutshifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you heard, whichhas been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. I, Paul, becamea servant of this gospel.24I am now rejoicing inmy sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing whatis lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, thatis, the church.25I became its servant according toGod’s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word ofGod fully known,26the mystery that has been hiddenthroughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed tohis saints.27To them God chose to make known howgreat among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of thismystery, which is Christ in you, the hope ofglory.28It is he whom we proclaim, warningeveryone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we maypresent everyone mature in Christ.
Gospel:Luke 10:38-42
38Now as they went on their way, he entered a certainvillage, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into herhome.39She had a sister named Mary, who sat at theLord’s feet and listened to what he wassaying.40But Martha was distracted by her manytasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that mysister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then tohelp me.”41But the Lord answered her, “Martha,Martha, you are worried and distracted by manythings;42there is need of only one thing. Mary haschosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”
