[2 Dark 2 Souls] Sequel imminent... Tears imminent... - Page 32 (2025)

The other night I started my Dex focused character, intending to primarily use the Great Scythe as a main weapon. I started as a Hunter and just to force myself to do things a little differently, I didn't take the Master Key... instead I just took the black firebombs to kill the Asylum Demon with immediately. First thing I did upon getting to Firelink was get two points into Strength, collect the homeward bones and run down into the Catacombs to grab the Great Scythe and port back up. I believe the run took two tries because I'm not used to rushing that direction.

Another thing I wanted to do is to basically not use a shield and retain fast roll to use primarily dodges. I have a tendency to shield tank and use medium armors, so I wanted to do something decidedly different this time. So after I beat Taurus (easily), I ran over to Darkroot Basin and grabbed the Grass Crest Shield which I've been wearing on my back pretty much the whole time, except when I've been practicing my parrying. Speaking of which, this character has had some insane luck, I got the Black Knight Sword, Greatsword and Halberd drops from the black knights in Undead Burg and the one in Basin guarding the Grass Crest, all first try.

I farmed Undead Parish mobs for the shards to get the scythe to +5, at which point I went and destroyed the Bell Gargoyles with the gold resin, then I went and got trolled by Capra Demon a few times before I finally got a good start and took him out so I could dip down into the Depths to get the Large Ember and free Larentius to get the Pyromancy Flame, as I had put 1 point into Attunement to get 1 spell slot.

At that point, I ran back over to the Asylum to get the doll, the Rusted Ring and kill Stray Demon for the Slab before I started sequence breaking a bit. I used the Darkroot Basin path into Valley of the Drakes to head into the Blighttown exit. I then spent some time farming leeches for Large Shards before I ran up the 'wrong' side of Blighttown and got Power Within, my one Pyromancy spell. Then I headed back up to Firelink to save my position before I went down and ran through New Londo and killed Ingward with my bow for the key so I could lower the water level and run past everything to get the Very Large Ember and ported back up then headed back to Andre to give him the new shiny toys so he could ascend my Great Scythe. And because of Snuggly and the Crystal Lizards I had run across so far, with only Taurus, Bell Gargoyles, Capra Demon and Stray Demon dead, I had a +15 Great Scythe already.

After that, I took out Quelaag (with Power Within on, good god the damage), did Ceaseless, then went back up and ran through Sen's and headed into Anor Londo where I went into the Painted World as soon as possible to collect the armor set I wanted, that being the Painting Guardian's armor. I used a shortcut from there to jump out without going for the boss yet so I can continue Anor Londo for now, though if I decide to switch to the Lifehunt Scythe, I may switch to a different armor set with higher bleed resist...

As for the Great Scythe as a weapon, good god this thing is insane. The first 7 extra points I put into Dex raised my AR with the weapon by 9 points each. The two-handed moveset is great and against almost all humanoid enemies, the strong attack is timed almost perfectly so that as they're moving toward you with their shield up to attack, as they start to get into range and you hit the button, they start dropping their shield just in time for you to slash across their face, usually one shotting them, or staggering them at very least. The Snakemen in Sen's are a slight exception in that my stats aren't quite high enough to one shot them with it, and they also don't get staggered, so you're usually left open for a moment where they can immediately counter, which is pretty annoying. The strong attack being horizontal and the light attack being vertical means that in either type of tight corridor, you can still attack just fine.

However, there is a noticable weakness that I've found so far... very small ground enemies are extremely hard to hit, like Crystal Lizards and the Sunlight Maggots I would assume. I keep a Claymore on me purely for that. The other main weakness is fucking dogs, both the ones around Capra and the fire dogs in Blighttown. They're just a little too fast for the Scythe's wind-up so they can knock you out of it really easily, and they also have a dodge jump that they love to use to completely avoid the horizontal slash, even though it goes straight through their bodies. Basically, dogs are annoying as fuck, and they're almost only placed in the most difficult places to fight them, either cramped quarters or narrow wood walkways, so so it's hard to dodge their jump and counter it, which would be the ideal way to take them out.

Oh yeah, I also picked up a Large Club from the infested barbarians which I've made +5 Divine so far, to be my Catacombs blunt weapon. Right now I can only two-hand it with my 18 Strength, but it's really satisfying to smash skeletons with. I've already got 40 Endurance, and ultimately I'm going to get Strength to 27 and Dexterity to 40, then Vitality to about 30 or so. That'll be the final build.

Definitely enjoying it so far since it's different than what I've usually played, which is magic tank builds mostly.
